Immigration Renewals
Renewing your immigration status on time avoids fines and complications. At RODAVAR we handle the renewal of your DIMEX, refugee card, or special category before the DGME: we coordinate your appointment, check that you meet the requirements, and follow up until you have your card in hand.
The process, step by step
- 1
We review your case
You message us on WhatsApp and we review together your category, the expiration date, and the requirements that apply to your renewal.
- 2
We schedule your appointment
We coordinate your appointment through the Appointment Portal (migracion.go.cr) or the 1311 line, and we tell you where to do the biometrics (BCR, VES windows, or Correos de Costa Rica).
- 3
We accompany you in the process
We prepare the documentation and accompany you in the process before the DGME so everything is in order on the day of your appointment.
- 4
Follow-up through to pickup
We follow up on your application until your card is issued, which is usually delivered about a month later.
What you need to have ready
- Valid ID document (current DIMEX or card).
- Valid social insurance (CCSS). Unemployment insurance does not count as social insurance for this process.

Frequently asked questions
How long does the renewal take?
Once the process is complete, the card is usually delivered about a month later. The total time depends on appointment availability and your category; that’s why it’s best to start early.
What if my document has already expired?
Within the first 30 days after expiration, the renewal can be done with a fine of roughly $3 per month. If you are more than 3 months expired, in some cases it no longer proceeds as a renewal and a new application must be filed. Message us and we’ll review your situation calmly.
Is social insurance mandatory?
Yes. To renew you need valid social insurance (CCSS). Keep in mind that unemployment insurance does not count as social insurance for this process.
Are the official costs included?
No. Our service fee covers the coordination and accompaniment. The official costs of the DGME and the BCR (the card, the bank commission, and postage) are paid separately and are subject to change.
